Two Dads: One computer-maniac, the other computer-phobic.

I have two Dads. That sounds strange doesn’t it? One is my genetic father, and the other is my geneticist father. The genetic Dad I’ve only ever lived with for one year when I was an infant, while the geneticist Dad is what you would call a step-father, but I’ve lived in close proximity with him for more than 20 years. I feel close to them both. I connect differently with each of them but on a pretty much equal level. The reason I’m sharing my personal information with you is because I’ve just had a realisation about my fathers in relation to the area that I work in: computers and the Internet. It’s really quite interesting. One father is a computer maniac. Whenever a new technology, software, gadget, or website emerges he is one of the first to grab it up and evaluate it. My other father has an …

TV Blogger

I suppose it’s a good thing when it’s damn near impossible to choose the DVD of the month. Both Extras and Weeds are so brilliant shows you couldn’t go wrong with either. I chose Weeds for the simple fact that it’s comprised of 12 episodes as opposed to Extras’ six. DVD of the Month – Weeds: Season 2 The second season of Weeds took it to another level. Mary Louise Parker is absolutely amazing (although she refuses to marry me) as Nancy Botwin, the matriarchal drug dealer. Parker manages a comedic touch in the face of dramatic obstacles with an understated elegance. Meanwhile, Doug (Kevin Nealon), Nancy’s business associate and accountant, proves himself one of the funniest characters in comedy today (He’s Dwight Shrewt funny folks). The rest of the cast is wickedly funny Runner Up Extras: The Complete Second Season Don’t take this as a knock on Extras in …

Turn Your Blog Into Money

I started my on line business venture just over four months ago. During that time, I have realized that a good professional looking web site is only part of the story. You need to get traffic to it and part of that process is having a blog associated with your site. The beauty of the idea of a blog, is it doesn’t cost you anything and can earn you a substantial income in it’s own right. Probably the easiest and cheapest way of starting an on line home business, is to simply get a Blog. You may already have one, but if not you can get one free from Blogger.com or WordPress. Did you know, that within your blog, you can advertise goods or services. Don’t worry if you don’t have goods or services to offer, you can register for an affiliate account with one of the many affiliate programs …

Rss To Blog Pro – A 6-Month Review

Background Search engines are particularly interested in websites with constantly updated, relevant content. Websites that appear static without a supply of fresh content may be viewed as dormant and in their drive to provide the latest, most relevant search results to users, search engines may rank such a website lower than a website that is updated regularly. What Is It? RSS to Blog Pro is a fully automated blog posting tool offering self-updating websites. It’s a PHP script that is installed on a single web hosting account. From this centralised installation, multiple blogs can be maintained with fresh content from various sources. Also available is an earlier, non-pro version, which has the same basic functionality, but requires a separate install for each blog it maintains. What Problem Does It Solve? Adding fresh – and importantly, relevant – content to websites can be a resource consuming task. Either you spend time …

RSS: The Basics All Bloggers Should Know

Blogs are making it possible for all of the world’s information to be accessible. But keeping up-to-date with the multitude of information you are interested in can be overwhelming. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the freshest news and content delivered directly to you without having to surf from one blog to another? RSS informs you when blogs have added new content. You can get the latest headlines and blog entries be they text, audio files, photographs or video in one screen as soon as they are published. Figuring Out RSS You must have noticed the little orange buttons with the icons XML, RSS, Subscribe, and Syndicate This Site when you visit blogs. Clicking on the button, all you will see is a heap of computer codes. This is an RSS feed. RSS stands for RDF Site Summary, Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication. The latter is the most …

Rob Benwell’s

Since the release of Rob’s “Blogging To The Bank” (version 1.0 that is), he’s been flooded with thousands of emails telling him of the success people have had applying his techniques on the internet. We all know that things can change rapidly on the Internet and how a simple change like the Google Slap can turn smooth running profits to nothing overnight. Rob is all too aware of this and has been working on how to make blogging a more sustainable and long-term income stream. In his book he tells of his trials of developing a blueprint of how to research keywords for your niches, creating a blog (as well as where to host it), content creation, optimizing your blog and generating the traffic you require to become a success. What we found most interesting is that Rob recommends outsourcing some of the content creation to companies that specialise in …

Removing Bloggers Block

Some of you may have already experienced writer’s, or in this case blogger’s, block. This is when you can’t seem to start blogging anything worthwhile, sometimes not even a single word’s worth. How could this happen when you were so good at blogging before? Why is it that you can’t get one word written? And the most frustrating thing of all: the more time you spend thinking about blogging, the less able you are to start your next project! Is there any cure? Luckily, there are a few things you can try. Visiting other people’s blogs is a good start. Read through your favorite ones, or do a random blog search and see what gets turned up. Reading what other people have to say can spark your own creativity and send you over the hump of blogger’s block. Leave some comments to get you started; you might be able to …

Reflections on Media Independence produced by the Internet

Rapid technological advancements in the 21st Century have ensured that society is now more connected, and there are an increased number of media channels available. Unfortunately, due to dominant media ownerships some would argue that though we have a choice in what we want to watch, our choice is still limited due to tight media control. However, to a limited extent media independence is now being balanced due to the increased popularity of the Internet. This can be clearly illustrated with the level of interaction in chat rooms and blogging. E-mails are being used more frequently, hence influencing the level of communication efficiency. Furthermore, even though advertising companies and people with the technological skill to design and build websites are still dominant in the communication sector, software programs such as Dreamweaver and Microsoft Frontpage provide easy web building packages that enable quick and effective website building for beginners. As a …
